A large spiral of clouds and storms is shown in this AVHRR channel 2 (near IR) image. Large thunderstorms are seen over Virginia and North Carolina. This image has not been corrected to a map coordinate system. Sunlight is from the east.

North Carolina thunderstorms on Jun 11, 1996

A line of overlapping thunderstorms appear in this image (see UIUC thunderstorm guide for details on storms). This channel 2 image (not ground corrected) shows overlapping anvils and some overshooting tops where large updrafts cause a protrusion above the thunderstorm anvils.
