16 April 1997 view of flood on Red River of the North

The following views of the flooding in the valley of the Red River of the North were obtained by the NOAA polar orbiting satellites at the indicated times. The views on the left are single AVHRR channel thermal infrared acquired at night and shown as black and white. Flood water shows as brighter areas. The views on the left are color composites from 3 channels of the AVHRR imager. Flood water shows as darker areas, snow and ice are bright.

Borders are not shown to avoid covering any of the image. Winnipeg, Manitoba is visible in the top images, brighter on the left, darker on the right image, at about 49.9N, 97.15W. Fargo, North Dakota is visible in the lower images, darker on the left, brighter on the right, at about 46.9N, 96.8W. The upper images are slightly more narrow than the lower since they are shape corrected for a slightly more northerly latitude. The north and south images match except for the minor scale difference.
