19, 20 April 1997 view of Grand Forks, ND fire and Red River flood

The Fire

The major news for this time period is the serious fires in downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. At least 11 buildings were destroyed, firefighting was greatly complicated by the flood waters. See the Grand Forks Herald Flood Watch page for many more details.

Here is a NOAA-12 image of the Grand Forks fire. Click on the image for a much larger area (at the same scale). This image was taken at 6:49 PM CDT, early evening before sundown. Clouds are seen in the full image, some dark and some light. The flood widens north of Grand Forks.

The Flood

The following images show several views which were acquired over the weekend. Only a reduced size narrow vertical strip of each image is shown, click on one for the full view. The top row of images show the northern section of the Red River of the North, the bottom row the southern section. The images times are given in UT and the views alternate between early evening NOAA-12 images (around 7 pm CDT) and middle of the night NOAA-14 images (around 3:30 AM CDT). Some clouds interfere. It is interesting how the contrast between the land and water varies with time of day. In the nighttime images the land has cooled to be colder than the water so the water appears brighter. In the early evening views the land is still warmer than the water so the water appears dark. High clouds appear very dark.
