This image of New Mexico was created by coloring AVHRR channels 1, 2, and 3
red, green, and blue respectively.
The bright yellow spot in the lower center
is a field of white gypsum sand dunes. They are contained within
White Sands National Monument and White Sands National Missle Range.
The thin black feature north of White Sands is a lava flow called
the Malpais (bad land) because of its very rugged surface. The large
dark region to the east of White Sands is the Sacramento Mountains.
The Rio Grande River is the thin near vertical line just west of the center
of the image and appearing reddish in some places (due to vegatation).
