This image of South Dakota was created by coloring AVHRR channels 1, 2, and 3 red, green, and blue respectively.

Some of the prominate features are:

  • The Black Hills: appear as a dark area just above the SW corner in this view. The NW parts contain snow, and a few clouds are visible scattered over the hills.
  • The Badlands appear bright yellow just to the east of the southern top of the Black Hills.
  • The Missouri River enters at the center of the northern boundary of the state. Ice is visible on the river in its northern section.
  • The Lakes District contain a number of frozen lakes near the northeast corner of the state.

From Donald P. Schwert, Department of Geosciences, North Dakota State University:

  • The Coteau des Prairies is the prominent wedge-shaped landform in the NE corner. Thick glacial sediments overlie this bedrock high. During the last (Wisconsinan) glaciation, the Coteau served to physically divide glacier ice into two lobes: the James Lobe to the west, and the Des Moines Lobe to the east.
