Early morning view 4:43 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 23, 1998
The image below was obtained from a
NOAA-14 pass before sunrise on
Tuesday morning, June 23. It is
from channel 3, the AVHRR channel that shows fires well. The fires
appear fewer and somewhat less intense. This commonly occurs at night
when the cooler temperatures and higher humidity make the fires less
strong.
Morning view 7:45 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 23, 1998
The images below are from a
NOAA-12 pass on the morning of Tuesday,
June 23.
The color composite shows that the wind is blowing toward the
northeast,
in yesterday morning's image it was blowing toward the west.
A cluster of plumes is seen on the east coast. The fire near Perry
has a complex plume structure due to shifting winds. It's not certain
from this image alone just how much of the yellow haze over the image
is actually smoke from these fires,
but
GOES satellite imagery indicates the much of it is.
The channel 3 image on the right cuts through
the smoke and shows the fires well. Also notice that urban areas appear
slightly brighter than their surroundings since they are warmer.
Jacksonville shows up well in this channel 3 image, as well as the
Orlando area.
