Evening view 7:22 PM MDT on Wednesday, May 10, 2000

The image below is from a NOAA-15 pass on the evening of Wednesday, May 10. The long smoke plume appears yellow and white in this color composite view, and extends into the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles. An AVHRR channel 3 image shows the fire itself, which is located to the south of the Jemez Mountains. The fire cause all 11,000 residents of Los Alamos to be evacuated. Los Alamos is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, birthplace of the first atomic bomb in 1945. White Rock, a small town 10 miles southeast of Los Alamos, was also evacuated. The fire began as a controlled burn on Friday, May 5, to clear scrub bush in Bandelier National Monument. Strong winds fanned the fire out of control.
