Satellite views of the Ohio River flood of 1997

Storms extended over parts of the Ohio River valley on the morning of March 1 and continued through the night and into March 3rd. The fourth was fairly clear, but storms returned on March 5th. Finally by March 6 the weather cleared.

Below are views from NOAA satellites as they passed over the flooded regions. The nighttime images are infrared from AVHRR channel 4 and are shown in black and white. Water appears brighter in the infrared images, clouds appear dark.

The daytime images are color composites using AVHRR channels 1, 2, and 3. With this color combination muddy water appears green, clear water is dark.

Because many of the state boundaries in this area follow rivers they have not been plotted to avoid covering the areas of interest. A map with boundaries is available.

Only a small part of the area is shown, click on each image to view more of the region.

The sun glitter image above is what NOAA-12 saw looking toward the rising sun on the morning of March 6. The sun shines brightly on areas covered by water. A few clouds also appear as bright areas. The image resolution is low since this area is near the edge of the complete scan.
