Dr. Thompson spent the early years of his career studying problems in few-body nuclear reactions
and stellar nucleosynthesis at the California Institute of
Technology , the University of Minnesota , and the
Universität Tübingen , Tübingen, Germany.
Since 1980, he has been employed by The Johns Hopkins University
Applied Physics Laboratory where he is currently supervisor
of the Theory and Modeling Section of the Ocean Remote Sensing
Group. For the past twenty-five years, he has participated in programs involving oceanographic
measurements, numerical modeling of surface wave phenomena, electromagnetic backscatter calculations,
and SAR image simulation. Dr. Thompson has been co-investigator on the
Georgia Strait Experiment (1983),
SARSEX (1984), Sognefjord Experiment (1988), the
Loch Linnhe Experiments (1987, 1989), and the
SAXON Experiment (1990). He served as modeling leader for the ONR Accelerated Research
Initiative on High Resolution Imaging of Mesoscale Ocean Features
HighRes (1990-1995),
and is currently investigator on NOAA-sponsored grants related to ocean remote sensing
and high-resolution wind mapping using SAR .
He is has also been principal investigator on NASA grants concerned with GPS oceanography and
EM-bias effects in altimetry. Dr. Thompson teaches electrodynamics in the
Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and is
Adjunct Professor in the Rosenstiel School for Marine and
Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Miami.
