What is JHU/APL/S1R ?

JHU = The Johns Hopkins University

The Johns Hopkins University consists of a number of institutions: the main university in Baltimore, the hospital and medical school in Baltimore, the Applied Physics Laboratory between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and a number of other institutions around the country and world.

APL = Applied Physics Laboratory

The Applied Physics Laboratory consists of a number of departments: Space, Submarine Technology, Fleet Systems, Research Center, Naval Warfare Analysis, Strategic Systems, Aeronautics.

S1R = Space Oceanography Group

The Space Oceanography Group is one of a number of groups in the Space Department. It primarily deals with satellite remote sensing of the ocean, backed up by in situ measurements. The group name has since been changed to Ocean Remote Sensing and the group letters to SRO but the IDL library designation is still the same.

Why is the library called JHU/APL/S1R ?

The library was formerly known as the JHU/APL IDL library. IDL has become more widespread at APL so to make room for other potential public libraries from APL the name was made more specific.
