This image shows the notheastern part of Baltimore. At this scale, every other pixel in every other line, roads are clearly seen: the beltway arcs around the top of the city, I-83 and I-95 radiate outward. Major radial avenues show up like strings of blue popcorn, which is commercial development, with the pink of housing areas on either side. In this color scheme concrete and blacktop have a blue appearance, and where vegetation is lacking the color is more pure blue. The pink areas are a mixture of roads and sidewalks that would show blue, and small grassy lawns that would show red if both were clearly resolved. They are not resolved and mix to give the pink color. The heart of the city appears dark mottled blue due to shadows of tall buildings. Fort McHenry is the red spot at the end of the peninsula formed by the two arms of the Baltimore harbor. Route 95 heads through the southwest area of baltimore exiting this image at the lower left corner.
This image shows the resolution limit of the landsat images, here each pixel was magnified 2 times, giving a blocky appearance. At this scale the large buildings are seen, and also the major roads and avenues. This image was taken in late 1982, just at the start of the major construction at the inner harbor, so Harborplace and the Aquarium were not built yet. Many piers are visible, as are some of the larger ships near Fort McHenry. The fort itself is somewhat visible. East Baltimore is dominated by the solid blue gray of dense urban housing, no room for lawns. The solid blue is broken by the large grassy Patterson Park; the small lake shows up as a dark patch. Another, slightly less red, patch north of downtown is Greenmont Cemetary. Broadway avenue may be traced north from Fells Point, with a complex of buildings to the east of it, just northwest of Patterson Park. This is the Johns Hopkins medical institution. Druid Hill lake is visible at the northwest corner of the image and just south of it the texture shows the street direction to be northwest/southeast.
