The mountains extending vertically in this image consist of two main parts: the wider Catoctin mountains on the right, and the more narrow South Mountain on the left. The town in the upper left corner of this image is Waynesboro Pennsylvania. The much small town just to the right of the Catoctins, just over halfway up the image, is Thurmont Maryland. Maryland route 77 passes west through Thurmont and through a narrow winding valley as it crosses the Catoctins. Where this road reaches the valley in the middle of this range a small black lake may be seen just below the road. This is Hunting Creek Lake in Cunningham Falls State Park. Cunningham Falls itself is just to the left of the lake, within walking distance. One of the mountains near the top of the image contains an underground city built in the 1950s and intended to house high government officials in case of a nuclear attack.
The ridge to the left, South Mountain, borders the Great Valley also known as Cumberland Valley in some places. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which extends from Maine to Georgia, follows the top of the ridge of South Mountain, from top to bottom. Route 70 cuts diagonally across South Mountain at the lower left corner of this image. Just below where route 70 crosses this mountain is a small lake in Greenbrier State Park. The dark, thin, winding feature along the right edge of this image is the Monocacy River. Maryland route 15 follows the base of the Catoctins just to their right.
This top of this image overlaps the bottom of the previous image slightly. The Catoctin Mountains, on the right, narrow down to a thin ridge which is cut by the Potomac River at the very bottom of this image, at Point of Rocks.
The Potomac River flows toward the right. The Shenandoah River joins it from below at the extreme left of the image. The town of Harpers Ferry West Virginia is on the ridge between these rivers and is the site of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. During summer numerous rafts and inner tubes may be seen on the river, negotiating the many rocks.
Catoctin Creek flows down the center of the broad valley to the left of Catoctin Mountain. The next ridge to the left is South Mountain. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, follows the ridge top of South Mountain from the top of this image down to the Potomac River. The trail then follows the north bank of the river left to the next mountain and crosses a railroad bridge into Harpers Ferry. The ridge which extends from the lower left corner to halfway up this image is Blue Ridge.
The town of Frederick is visible just over halfway up the image near the right side of the image. The Monocacy River is visible along the right side of the image above and below Frederick. Extending toward the upper right from Frederick are routes 70 (above) and 40.
