This image shows the Washington D.C. area, subsampled every 5th pixel. The Potomac River flows from upper left to lower right, with D.C. located where the river widens. The inner city shows blue-gray and the suburban areas are shades of pink or lavender. Two reservoirs are visible north of the city: narrow Rocky Gorge, and to its upper left Tridelphia. Three major roads may be traced northeast from the city. The continuous thin line is I-95 which is easy to see from the right edge of Rocky Gorge reservoir (the dam is visible from I-95) toward the upper right corner of the image. Rt 29 is almost visible to the left of I-95, it crosses Rocky Gorge at about the midpoint, and appears broken up in this image. The small wooded stream valley above Rocky Gorge is that of the Middle Patuxent, just above it is a very faint, circular, pinkish discoloration in the image, this is the town of Columbia. To the right of I-95 may be seen a broken strip of urban areas, this is Rt. 1. Some of the small red patches in the suburban areas are golf courses. The small brown patch near the upper left corner is Sugarloaf mountain. BWI airport is at the right edge below the upper right image corner, Dulles airport is near the middle of the left image side.
