Environmental Surface Expressions
in SAR Ocean Imagery

a compendium of images and spectra
illustrating how spaceborne SAR can reveal unique information on
winds, waves, and frontal patterns over the ocean.

1. StormWatch 97-98 :   RADARSAT SAR ocean imagery from Cape Hatteras to the Grand Banks, with colocated surface wind, wave, and temperature estimates. Time interval: 01 Nov 97 to 28 Mar 98. Potential SAR data set: 180 frames of dimension 450 km square, with associated wind, wave, and temperature estimates from a variety of sources.

2. RADARSAT:   RADARSAT SAR ocean imagery from Cape Hatteras to Cape Cod, with colocated surface wind, wave, and temperature estimates. Time interval: 10 Oct 96 to 09 Mar 97. SAR data set: 32 frames of dimension 300 km square, with associated AVHRR imagery and FNMOC wind and wave analyses.

3. ERS-1:   ERS-1 SAR ocean imagery from Cape Hatteras to Cape Cod, with thematic index and some colocated AVHRR imagery. Time interval: 17 Apr 92 to 25 May 92. SAR data set: 87 frames of dimension 100 km square, with associated AVHRR imagery.

4. SIR-C:   SAR spectra from the Southern Ocean embedded in FNMOC WAM wave vector fields. Time interval: 10 to 19 Apr and 1 to 10 Oct 94. SAR data set: 1173 spatially evolving wave number spectra collected from 23 passes between 7 and 9 Oct 94.
