The Great Smoky Mountains fill westernmost North Carolina. Cumberland Valley parallels the eastern border of Tennessee on its west side. This valley is filled with numerous small ridges. Just to the west of Cumberland Valley is the Cumberland Plateau which is cut by the Sequatchie River valley extending from the triple point, TN, GA, AL, northeast halfway across Tennessee. The various colors on the Cumberland Plateau indicate areas of various types of vegatation.
