The latest map captions

Whenever I go on a month-long field test I seem to get a flood of new captions. So far I cannot deal with new captions while on field tests so they must wait until I get back and catch up on higher priority items first (the maps are high priority to me but I have to make a living also). I think I am currently caught up with the captions (as of 1996 Jun 16). If you are a repeat visitor to these maps you might like to know what's new. Only the captions are updated, there are no plans to update the maps (see below for newer sets of maps).

Bob Hyatt has written a very nice addition to the existing caption for this map.
Rebecca Staton has contributed what she describes as "musings from her childhood", her personal recollections of the past.

250800505.cap
Also by Rebecca Staton is some additional notes added to the existing caption for this area.

300900505.cap
Craig Lemke has contributed a new caption for this area. It describes the Ouachita Mountains.

David E. Bruce has added a vast wealth of detail to the existing caption for this area.
I want to thank all those that have taken time to contribute map captions. Many viewers of these maps find them through Hal Mueller's web page. I have not been able to contact him by email for some time and his page may not be up-to-date with the latest captions. This causes a number of submissions for areas already covered by a caption but that is not a problem, I just add the incoming captions to the end of any existing ones. But now that you know, check the map source site listed below to see what's available.
The map source ftp site is:
        ftp://fermi.jhuapl.edu/pub/gifmap/
A web page pointing there is:
        ftp://fermi.jhuapl.edu/www/sl9/us-map.html
The original web page with these maps was Hal Mueller's at:
        http://www.zilker.net/~hal/apl-us/
However his web page does not get updated with new captions
as far as I know. I have not been able to reach him by email.
