Variability of the Gulf Stream II

Variability of the Gulf Stream

Justin Monaldo

This research practicum project was conducted in partial fulfillment of requirements to receive a "Science and Technology" citation upon graduation from Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

Research Goal:

The aim of this research project is to use sea-surface temperature data collected from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) which imaged the Atlantic Ocean over a period of four years to track the path of the north wall of the Gulf Stream. These data were used to determine the variability of the path of the north wall of the Gulf Stream over time. This project builds on a previous project using only two years worth of data. Here a computer algorithm was used to track the Gulf Stream rather than visual inspection of the data. The results here show less variablity than observed in the previous project.
